Overview
What it is
Freestanding stove installation places the appliance on a compliant hearth in front of, or within, a chimney breast, connected to the flue via a rear or top exit. It is the most versatile solid-fuel install: it works in cottages, Victorian terraces, Edwardian villas, barn conversions and modern extensions equally well.
Who it is for
Right for anyone who wants the fire to be the centrepiece of the room, wants the radiant warmth of a genuinely hot appliance, and appreciates the honest, industrial character of exposed cast iron or steel.
When to book
Suits period property renovations, extension builds and any situation where the chimney breast is being retained as a feature. Also the fastest install to specify, most freestanding jobs are on site within four to six weeks of quote acceptance in the busy season.
Why professional help matters
Radiant heat from a freestanding stove warms people, walls and furniture, it is a different quality of heat from convection or gas central heating. Correctly sized to the room, it becomes the primary heat source on all but the coldest weeks of the year.
If it's ignored
Freestanding solid fuel appliances need a hearth of specified size and non-combustibility around and in front of the stove. Ignoring it means an install that fails Building Control and invalidates your home insurance.
The gap between top-of-stove and start-of-liner is where amateur installs leak. We use single-length rigid connectors, sealed with fire cement, feeding into a correctly sized liner, no cobbled joints.
The visual impact of a freestanding stove depends on chamber colour, backdrop material and lighting. We think about this at survey, free of charge, not after the plasterer has finished.
Our process
The same disciplined sequence on every project, whether it's a Georgian townhouse in Windsor or a new-build media wall in Ascot.
01
Chris visits your home to measure the chimney, hearth, room volume and ventilation. We inspect the flue, discuss aesthetics and confirm what is achievable in your specific property, from Georgian townhouses to sealed new-build breasts.
02
Every line item priced: stove, flue components, hearth, chamber works, building control. Potential extras (unforeseen chimney issues, structural adjustments) are itemised in advance so the number you sign off is the number you pay.
03
We refine the stove choice, materials, chamber finish and flue route with you. Deposit: cost of the stove plus 50% of installation, secures your slot within 72 hours of quote acceptance.
04
Dust sheets and protection go down first. Our HETAS-registered team completes the install to Building Regulations, cleans as we go, and treats your home like our own, no shortcuts, no mess left behind.
05
Smoke test, draw test, first light with you present, plus a full walk-through of controls, fuel and maintenance. HETAS certificate issued to you and your insurer. 12-month workmanship guarantee starts the day we leave.
The benefit
Six specific, measurable outcomes we deliver on every job. No vague marketing claims.
Cast iron and steel bodies radiate heat you can feel across the room, different quality to gas central heating.
The stove sits proud rather than recessed, full flame view from anywhere in the room.
4kW to 14kW+, single door and double door, tall and squat, traditional and Scandinavian, we specify the one that fits your room and your taste.
Ash pans, glass and top plates are all accessible without removing the appliance.
A properly installed, certified wood burner is one of the most consistently cited features by buyers of period property in Berkshire.
Every install is notified under our HETAS registration 3869 with certificate to you and your insurer.
Deep detail
The engineering, materials and decisions behind the finished job.
We build hearths in slate, honed granite, sandstone, brick and, in contemporary settings, polished concrete or steel. Every hearth meets BS 8303 for size, thickness and non-combustibility around a solid-fuel appliance.
The chamber behind the stove is dressed to complement the stove and the room, traditional brick slip herringbone, honed slate, natural stone or clean rendered chamber. This is where a designer-led install shows up.
Rear-flue or top-flue exit into a 316 or 904-grade stainless flexi-liner, vermiculite-backfilled for thermal performance, terminating in an anti-downdraught cowl at the pot. Twin-wall external runs available where no chimney exists.
We calculate room heat-loss before specifying kW. Oversizing a freestanding stove in a modern well-insulated room means running it low, glazing the glass, tarring the flue and shortening the life of the appliance.

Frequently asked
From £1,700 excluding the stove where hearth and chimney are already suitable. Chamber refurbishment, hearth replacement and chimney lining add itemised costs to the written quote so nothing is hidden.
For most standard Berkshire living rooms, 4.5–6kW is the correct output. Larger open-plan spaces or barn conversions may need 8–14kW. We calculate this at survey rather than guess.
Standard freestanding installs are 1–3 days. Complex installs involving chamber rebuild or external twin-wall flue can extend to 4–5 days.
Often yes, subject to size and non-combustibility check at survey. Where the existing hearth is too small or fails the check, we build a compliant replacement in the material you choose.
Clearances to combustibles vary by model, modern well-shielded stoves need less than older cast iron stoves. We specify a stove that fits your room, not the other way around.
No. Some ticking as metal expands and contracts on light-up is normal and, for many owners, part of the appeal.
Yes: most freestanding models are available in wood-only or multi-fuel variants. We explain the pros and cons before you commit.
